Two Martin Dene juniors enjoyed success this month at the Kent Junior County Closed Championships, held at Bromley Tennis centre, Newstead.
Sophia Thomas, the county number one in the girls 14 and under section, won the 14 and under event at the championships. She endured a number of hard fought matches such as a three set, semi final win, which ended in a 1-6 6-2 6-4 victory for Sophia. The final ended in unfortunate circumstances as her opponent had to retire only six games in to the match. The tournament caps an end to a successful summer for the 14 year old.
Alex Juniper was the first seed for the boys fourteen and under event; he had a tough draw meeting another Martin Dene junior, Lucas Percy in the quarter finals. Alex successfully booked his spot in the quarter finals, only dropping one game in the process. He then beat the sixth seed, Lucas Percy, 6-1 6-4, a very impressive result. Alex then negotiated a victory over the eighth seed and won the final against the fifth seed 6-1 6-1. The event brings a close to a memorable summer which saw Alex complete on the lawns of the All England Lawn Tennis Club.
The pair also entered numerous other events such as the doubles and the 16 and under events, however despite a strong start neither of the pair were able to reach the final of these events.
Everyone associated with Martin Dene congratulate Sophia and Alex for their wins at the Kent Championships.
