The Martin Dene LTC club tournament was one of the best witnessed in recent history, with a number of county standard performances offered from a large number of different players.
The highlight of the day was the Men’s singles final, which was a close fought bout between two club giants, David McGonigle and Ravi Salh. The match was close as expected, with a number of great shots from Ravi as he took the first set with ease. However, Dave fought back and claimed the second set with a number of long rallies, in which Dave's consistency got the better of Ravi. And David's agility and fitness helped him to win the match. After months of practise on court and in the gym he claimed the men’s trophy, taking the third set 6-0.
But before the men’s final took place were two other matches, the Ladies singles final and Men’s- vets doubles final. Despite the Ladies singles being quite straight forward, in which Elpeth won 6-0 6-1, the most respect of the day was given to Sharon, who had enough courage to play the match- which was well respected by other club members.
The vet’s final was won by Ian and Keith, who defeated Doug and Sean in a gripping three set contest. The Men’s doubles final was won by Dave and Steve Seffens in almost exhibition style against Sean Jefferson and Alex Juniper.
Other matches included the mixed final, won by Suk and Elspeth and the ladies doubles, won by Jill and Margaret.
Thanks go to Ian Milligan who helped to arrange the tournament, Steve Seffens for the trophies, everyone who umpired and all of those who came to support the event. Finally, well done to all of those who took part in one of the finals.
The club tournament of 2010 saw the rise of a number of competitors. The most notable performance came from Alan Roberts who reached the mens singles final for the first time, eventually losing to Ravi Salh in a narrow straight sets match. Also, junior Alex Juniper won the mens doubles alongside Steve Seffens beating Sean and Ian in the final. Elpeth captured the ladies singles and Ian Milligan won yet another Vets trophy.
